Caring for Creatures of the Sea
At the Sea Turtle Conservation Project in Lombok, participants engaged in vital hands-on efforts to care for and protect rescued turtles. The months focus was on maintaining a clean, safe and a healing environment for the turtles through daily husbandry and rehabilitation activities.
We began each day with deep-cleaning tasks: scrubbing tanks, sanitizing the conservation area and ensuring the turtles’ living spaces were clear of algae, waste and harmful bacteria. Injured turtles received special attention, with administering medicine and monitoring their recovery. Feeding sessions were also part of the daily routine, involving precise preparation of cut fish portions for each turtle’s needs.
One of the most rewarding moments came during the turtle release events, where rehabilitated turtles were returned to the sea! The turtles were healthy, strong and ready to swim free again. These releases marked the full cycle of care, from rescue to rehabilitation to reintegration.
